Fabric Technologist

Our client, a popular established Outerwear company is looking for a Fabric Technologist to work across outdoor apparel and accessories, covering multiple product categories.

This role offers flexible hours and is able to be filled in a full-time capacity or over five short days each week. (If part-time, the salary will be pro-rata accordingly.)

Reporting to the Product Manager, you will work alongside four Designers and three Garment Technologists to manage the testing and approval of all materials, lab-dyes and bulk fabrics in line with the Quality Manual. 


Key responsibilities will be:

  • Ensuring that product care labelling is compliant with company policy and industry regulation
  • Managing the testing of textiles to meet our strict company standards
  • Ensuring materials are produced within REACH guidelines
  • Managing the Critical path 
  • Developing and manage the company RSL
  • Liaising with our colour standard partner to ensure all mills and suppliers have access to the seasonal palette
  • Answering queries from suppliers on materials issues
  • Working with the Production Manager and Quality Manager to find solutions to production issues relating to materials
  • Visiting product and fabric suppliers to build relationships and resolve issues
  • Staying abreast of competitor product and 
  • Developing materials to the highest possible quality, ensuring that they are safe, legal and meet the required quality and functional standards 
  • Assisting the Product Manager with supplier meetings & factory visits throughout the development process
  • Understanding and communicating product care challenges from the Customer Services team
  • Reviewing working methods & make continual improvements to efficiency
  • Motivating and inspiring junior team members

The candidate will have: 

  • Excellent knowledge of fabric construction and experience in a similar role, ideally within the Outdoor or Sportswear industries
  • Experience of working with Far East suppliers 
  • Good knowledge and awareness of UK/European fabric testing standards and requirements
  • Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail
  • Project management skills and the initiative to keep to a critical path
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • The ability and desire to take on foreign travel
