Sterling Apparel Limited (“SAL”) is an OEM garment manufacturer established in the early 1990’s serving the higher priced segment of the ready-to-wear market for large American brands. It has offices in Hong Kong and manufacturing operations, both owned and outsourced, in China, Philippines and Sri Lanka. Our two Sri Lanka factories (Chiefway Lanka (Pvt) Ltd. and Chiefway (Pvt) Ltd.) currently manufactures mostly cotton pants/shorts, blazers, wool coats, jackets and skirts. The larger of the two facilities with over 1000 employees is located in the Katunayake Export Processing Zone near the Colombo airport. Another factory with about 400 employees is located in Meegoda about one and a half hour drive from the larger factory. The Sri Lanka operation has been in an expansionary phase in the last six months having added head counts, space, new machinery and equipment as well as outsourced capacity.

The Candidate – General Manager, Sri Lanka Operations

The primary mandate of the GM is to be responsible for the continuous growth and profitability of the Sri Lanka operations working closely with SAL and functioning chiefly as its manufacturing arm. The ideal candidate should be capable of planning strategically for the business while showing a strong grasp of details in overseeing the manufacturing function ensuring quality production and on time delivery, as well as other support services such as merchandizing, warehousing, IE and logistics.  In addition, the successful candidate will have the experience, presentation skills and gravitas to represent the company in liaising with outside constituencies – customers, government bodies, labor organizations…, etc.

Overall Management

  • Reports to the owner of Chiefway Group
  • Direct reports include the following functional heads : Factory manager, HR manager, Social compliance manager, Merchandizing manager, QA manager, IE manager, Sample room manager, Warehouse manager, Logistics manager & Finance manager
  • Work with Peer group in SAL & Chiefway HK including: Head of merchandizing, VP operations – technical & QA and Head of Finance
  • Liaise closely with the sales/merchandizing/production planning functions in SAL & Chiefway to ensure optimal utilization of own manufacturing facilities, as well as the development and management of outsourced facilities
  • Provide leadership, motivation and guidance to local management and staff through clear visions and continued improvements to existing practices

    Requirements

  • Tertiary education ideally in related disciplines, with good English communication skills
  • Minimum of 20 years of solid work experience in a garment manufacturing environment in South East Asia including preferably Sri Lanka progressing from a technical/production capacity to a more encompassing GM role
  • Knowledge and prior experience with American retail brands is a must; with up market brands, preferable
  • Excellent leadership qualities with tact and high level of integrity, and cross cultural sensitivities to complement effective interpersonal skills
  • Prior experience P&L accountability in a garment manufacturer is highly desirable
