Our client specialises in the design and marketing of technical outdoor clothing and equipment. Their experienced and enthusiastic teams develop innovative designs, manufactured to the highest standard and brought to market throughout the world.

As their Materials Manager, you will use your fabric & trim knowledge to contribute to the execution of a materials palette, be responsible for the on-time commercialization of all fabrics, and oversee production. You will drive the analysis and review of materials that result in greater efficiencies and profitability.

Overall Purpose:

Ensure the availability of materials that support the strategic brand & design direction to enable commercial success. Work closely with designers to find or develop the right materials according to calendar timelines, target prices, sourcing policy, and quality standards.

Key Responsibilities:

Be the key contact and consultant for all material related questions, for the brand and its supply base  Steer the material selection process in-line with strategic brand & design direction, and drive material consolidation to improve efficiency;  Monitor and manage all material developments (working together with Design and suppliers) and be responsible for initial material price negotiations with suppliers during the development stage 

Manage in-house and external testing, initiating wearer trials where necessary; Manage the lab dip approval process; Ensure fabric and trim databases are maintained;  Cooperate with the Buying Team to improve material efficiencies; Drive innovation projects and ensure their successful technical implementation and be the key contact for all materials related sustainability subjects; Manage and approve production shipment samples; Manage fabric production issues

Excellent communication skills, including an understanding of different cultures, customs and business practices; Ability to anticipate problems, offer solutions, and address issues with fabric and trim in order to meet the Design team’s aesthetic goals and financial targets.

Ability to interpret design intent and offer alternative solutions;  Ability to cope with change, to anticipate needs, solve problems, perform research and analyze results;  Understanding of manufacturing realities and constraints; Ability to work independently or with limited guidance and to accept and meet critical deadlines with good planning and organization skills;  Ability to re-design processes according to the business need with Strong IT skills (e-mail, MS office).

Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in textile technology/ engineering or comparable degree/education ideally with a  Minimum of 5 years work experience in a fabric technical role;  Strong understanding of manufacturing processes of yarns & fabrics, dyeing & finishing, mechanical & chemical treatments.

Knowledge of material types: knits, wovens & non-wovens.

Knowledge of performance fabric technologies: waterproof/breathable, moisture movement, insulations, etc 

Interest in outdoor sports and performance fabrics
