Footwear Product Developer

Job Overview

Candidates should be very knowledgeable in technical footwear development. This should include relevant experience in spec sheet construction, design translation, product and material testing costing and an advanced prototyping experience with pattern engineering and project management is also preferred.

Departmental Overview

The Footwear Product Developer works within the product development team and reports to the Product Development Manager. Close working with the Merchandising team is essential as well as liaising with the wider VF organisation.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities

  • Maintain an awareness of footwear trends and innovations to support design and merchandising functions and feed into the GTM process.
  • Work with merchandising and design to initiate and manage prototypes through the GTM process.
  • Management of development CP to ensure on-time delivery of the entire development process from concept to warehouse delivery. Escalating any exceptions to PDM and the merchandising team.
  • Manage development/selection of lasts and tooling including sign-off of sole blue prints and opening of production molds. This is to include reporting of costs incurred.
  • Lead fit sessions from initial samples through to final production.
  • Manage footwear supply base and be able to communicate in an effective way with off-shore teams and suppliers.
  • Manage risk assessment of the product throughout the development and manufacturing process and communicate accordingly to the relevant stakeholders as monitoring returns and overall quality performance of suppliers.
  • Liaise with other VF footwear functions.
  • Foreign travel as required to VF offices, suppliers, trade fairs, product launches and sales meetings.

Essential Requirements - your MUST HAVE requirements

  • Experience and knowledge of the footwear development process from design to production.
  • Experience of last development and fitting
  • Knowledge of sole molds, compounds and constructions.
  • Knowledge of footwear tests and standards
  • Knowledge of footwear materials and components from sole to upper and ability to use research and material innovation to push the product forward.
  • Knowledge of leather and tanneries essential
  • Minimum 5 years of footwear development experience
  • Strong technical knowledge and understanding of footwear construction and manufacturing processes.
  • Extensive experience of travel to global supply base for product development and manufacturing.
  • Must be able to work within a team and cross functional.
  • Ability to self-manage, self-motivate, prioritise work and multi-task.
  • Strong communication skills

Preferred Requirements - your NICE TO HAVE requirements

  • An understanding of PPE regulations and standards for safety footwear and testing the requirements to enable CE certification of the products or an ability to learn on the job with training.
  • Design and development packages experience e.g. Adobe.
  • Knowledge of working with a PLM system
  • Design experience.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing production processes and ability to action improvements during vendor visits.
