Junior Fabric Technologist

Position Profile:              Junior Fabric Technologist

Location:                          Preston, UK

Reporting to:                   Fabric Technical Manager, UK

Role purpose: Working in partnership with the Fabric Technical Manager, the Junior Fabric Technologist role will help to develop and manage our current workwear and protective wear fabric supply bases to meet the long terms needs of the business. Supporting the growth of our fabric innovations, sustainable fabric offers and help to source and collate new fabric opportunities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the PPE and Workwear vision of the Alsico brand and ensure execution within fabric innovation.
  • Understand and maintain up to date knowledge re PPE regulations and all relevant standards
  • Support the development and/or approval of fabrics across the business ensuring that they meet all required quality standards (shade, handle, appearance, and performance)
  • Organise relevant fabric testing and/or wearer trials and accurately analyse the results including independent and own mill fabric test reports
  • Supporting to ensure that the quality, ethical and legal standards are met for all fabrics
  • Establish an Alsico fabric library to aid product development
  • Maintain and update the Alsico fabric specification files and the fabric database ensuring accurate records
  • Develop and foster strong working relationships with direct vendors, acting when needed to resolve fabric technical related issues
  • Provide clear updates on all work in progress and developments, keep status tracking systems up to date
  • To research and report on the latest technical and innovation trends and market competition within the Textile / workwear industry.
  • Assist in the application of tenders from a fabric technical perspective
  • Understand the processes involved in commercial industrial laundering and the effect it has on workwear and PPE Protective Clothing
  • Support the Alsico Sales team and Product Development team in any queries relating to fabrics.
  • Attend UK and European fabric textile trade fairs and suppliers’ meetings when needed, to meet fabric sourcing, innovation and development needs
  • Attend any relevant training sessions

Knowledge and Experience:

  • 12 months fabric / textile related industry experience (can include a placement year)
  • Fibre, yarn, dyeing, weft knitted and woven fabric theoretical technical knowledge
  • A keen interest and an up to date understanding of fibre/material sustainability, circularity, and textile innovations
  • Ability to analyse and identify a wide range of materials, and fabrics visually and by the written technical specification and textile testing reports.
  • A knowledge / awareness of fabric testing procedures
  • Experience in shade colour assessments including spectrophotometer readings
  • Experience in maintaining fabric quality to physical and colour performance requirements and the associated corrective actions when needed.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and to liaise with colleagues in other functions within the business
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to liaise with suppliers and customers, some of whom English will not be their first language. 
  • Ability to prioritise and to switch between different tasks and work to critical path requirements
  • Analytical problem-solving skills and decision-making ability
  • Highly proficient in Microsoft Office
