Rewards & Benefits

Rewards & benefits

Wherever you join us, you can be sure your contribution will be recognised. We expect 100% from our people - and give nothing less in return. As well as a highly competitive salary, you'll enjoy a benefits package that ranks among the best in the industry. On that includes:

Training & Development

Matalan would be nothing without its people. Training and development is therefore a top priority. By developing talent within the company, we were able to make over 300 promotions last year. You could be the next.

Retail Management

From day one, we'll help you identify your training requirements and create a personal development plan. You'll then have access to a wide range of resources. These will include self-study materials such as DVDs, CDs and books, plus a selection of workshops covering key topics such as Coaching, Influencing, Leadership, Loss Prevention and Health & Safety.

You'll also have the opportunity to gain qualifications through our partnership with the Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM). These widely-recognised managerial qualifications will both enhance your skills and help you progress in your career.

That said, there's no substitute for real-life experience - especially when it comes to running stores like ours. You can therefore expect to do most of your learning informally and on-the-job. You won't be left on your own, however. Senior colleagues will be there to guide and support you every step of the way.

General Sales Assistants

You'll be an ambassador for the store, so we won't take your training lightly. We put all General Sales Assistants through the Star Programme. This four-hour induction covers all the key aspects of the role. It'll be followed up with modular training that'll lead to you gaining a recognised professional qualification in Retail Skills.

From then on, you can choose to advance your skills through two programmes

Retail Apprenticeships: This twelve-month programme will allow you to gain several invaluable qualifications - including a Level 2 Certificate or Diploma in Retail Skills. It usually begins in July and is available in selected stores. It's an ideal programme for those who want to progress and take on more responsibility.

Trainee Management Programme: This is for people who want to take their first step into management. You'll attend a national induction day and five key managerial workshops, which look at both the operational and behavioural competencies you'll need to become one of our Managers. This programme is open to around 120 Sales Assistants each year.

As soon as you join, you'll have a full induction to introduce you to the way we work. From then on, we'll work with you to identify a route that will help you to achieve your goals. If you're a permanent employee, we'll help you put together a personal development plan. We'll also provide a selection of development workshops covering both technical and softer skills.

Head Office

From the outset, we'll help you identify your training requirements and create a personal development plan. You'll then have access to a wide range of learning resources. Depending on your position, you'll also have the opportunity to participate in a number of courses that will lead to a nationally-recognised qualification with the Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM).

Leadership Development Programme - Junior Management: This is a development programme aimed at junior managers who lead a small team and want to build their skills in areas like performance and change management, and staff development. It will lead to you gaining an ILM Level 3 Award in Leadership Development.

Leadership Development Programme - Middle Management: Aimed at those managers who have progressed to running larger teams, this course covers key areas like self discovery, as well as personal, interpersonal and strategic leadership. It will lead to you gaining an ILM Level 3 Certificate in Leadership Development.

Leadership Development Programme - Senior Management: This programme is aimed at senior-level managers who've already attained the ILM Level 3 Certificate and Award in Leadership Development. You will have complete flexibility over your choice of modules. It will lead to an ILM Level 5 Certificate in Leadership Development.

Core Development Workshops: There are development workshops for all levels of management running throughout the year, covering a wide range of managerial topics and skills.

Open Learning Zone

As well as workshops we also have an Open Learning Zone, which contains various self-study materials such as DVDs, CDs and books.

Last year we promoted hundreds of people at various levels across the business. If you've got the talent and the ambition, we'll make sure you get every opportunity to move up the chain.
